Match Preview: Pakistan vs New Zealand – Champions Trophy Opener
Big Picture: A Clash of Contenders
The Champions Trophy returns after an eight-year hiatus, and what better way to reignite the ODI flame than a showdown between Pakistan, the defending champions, and New Zealand, their recent tri-series conquerors. In an era where ODIs often play second fiddle to T20s and Tests, this tournament offers a stage for the format’s unique blend of strategy and spectacle. Both teams arrive with a history of near-misses in recent World Cups, oscillating between brilliance and fragility. With New Zealand edging Pakistan in a thrilling tri-series final just days ago, the opener promises high stakes and fiercer rivalry.
Form Guide
- Pakistan: LWLWW (Last five ODIs) – A mixed bag, including a tri-series final loss to New Zealand.
- New Zealand: WWWLW – Momentum on their side after clinching the tri-series title.
In the Spotlight
- Babar Azam (Pakistan): The star batter seeks to silence whispers about his 21-innings ODI century drought. Now opening, his form is critical to Pakistan’s top-order stability.
- New Zealand’s Spin Duo: Mitchell Santner (left-arm spin) and Michael Bracewell (off-spin) were tri-series standouts, stifling opponents with economy rates under 4.5. Their control in the middle overs could dictate the game.
Team News
- Pakistan: Haris Rauf’s return from a side strain bolsters their pace attack. Expect a full-strength XI featuring Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, and Abrar Ahmed’s mystery spin.
Likely XI: Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam, Saud Shakeel, Mohammad Rizwan (c & wk), Salman Agha, Tayyab Tahir, Khushdil Shah, Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, Abrar Ahmed. - New Zealand: Rachin Ravindra’s availability remains uncertain after a head injury. Will Young may partner Devon Conway if Ravindra is rested. Lockie Ferguson and Ben Sears are ruled out, leaving Jacob Duffy and Will O’Rourke to lead the pace attack.
Likely XI: Ravindra/Young, Conway, Kane Williamson, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham (wk), Glenn Phillips, Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Santner (c), Matt Henry, Jacob Duffy, Will O’Rourke.
Pitch and Conditions
Karachi’s National Stadium has recently served up batting paradises, including a record-breaking 352 by South Africa and a successful 242 chase by New Zealand. Spinners may find subtle assistance, but fast bowlers have struggled (avg. 33.67 this decade). Expect a sunny day with temperatures around 29°C, ideal for a high-scoring contest.
Stats and Trivia
- New Zealand won all three previous Champions Trophy meetings (2000, 2006, 2009).
- Daryl Mitchell boasts the best ODI average (50.42) among Kiwis with 1,000+ runs.
- Shaheen Afridi is the leading ODI wicket-taker (21) since the 2023 World Cup.
- Pakistan’s 2017 triumph was spearheaded by Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam, both featuring again.
Quotes
- Mohammad Rizwan (Pakistan): “Senior players thrive under pressure. This is our moment to shine.”
- Tom Latham (New Zealand): “Familiarity with Pakistani conditions gives us an edge.”
What to Expect
A battle of Pakistan’s fiery pace attack against New Zealand’s spin mastery and middle-order muscle. With both sides prone to oscillating between explosive and erratic, the match could hinge on key moments: Babar’s fluency, Santner’s control, or a late burst from Afridi. Strap in for a classic ODI duel – where the middle child of cricket formats reminds us why it still captivates.

Match Reports
1.57pm Good day one and all! The anthems have come and gone which means we’re on the cusp of getting this show on the road. God speed everyone – let’s Champs Trophy!
1.30pm Toss time! Mohammad Rizwan tosses the coin, Mitchell Santner calls, and Pakistan have won the toss. They will bowl first. Rizwan expects dew to set in later tonight. “If we think of ourselves as defending champions, we will only put ourselves under pressure. We just want to keep it relaxed.”
Haris Rauf comes in for Faheem Ashraf from the XI that lost to New Zealand in the final of the tri-series.
“We’ve been lucky enough to play these guys a lot, home and away, over the last few years,” Santner says of New Zealand’s familiarity with Pakistan. Matt Henry comes into New Zealand’s attack from the tri-series final, and Jacob Duffy goes out. No Ravindra.
Pakistan: 1 Fakhar Zaman, 2 Babar Azam, 3 Saud Shakeel, 4 Mohammad Rizwan (capt & wk), 5 Salman Ali Agha, 6 Tayyab Tahir, 7 Khushdil Shah, 8 Shaheen Shah Afridi, 9 Naseem Shah, 10 Haris Rauf, 11 Abrar Ahmed.
New Zealand: 1 Will Young, 2 Devon Conway, 3 Kane Williamson, 4 Daryl Mitchell, 5 Tom Latham (wk), 6 Glenn Phillips, 7 Michael Bracewell, 8 Mitchell Santner (capt), 9 Matt Henry, 10 Nathan Smith, 11 Will O’Rourke.
1.25 pm The toss is nearly here. A good time to catch up on our team previews for Pakistan and New Zealand.
Guruprasad S: “Most memorable moments: Zaheer Khan’s yorker to S. Waugh (2000).Scott Styris’ six off Wasim Akram (2000 semi-finals).” — Zaheer bowled a lot of yorkers in his career, but that ball to Waugh wasn’t one, even if thousands of people keep calling it that!
Sanket: “Babar opening with Fakhar sound very very dangerous but in reality that could backfire as well. New ball is the best chance for the bowler to take wickets in the ODIs and exposing your best batter to it seems a very dangerous tactic especially since he is the one who holds that batting line up together, would love to see how this shapes up.”
anees: “@ Ankur baid – Virat was not caught behind. He was dropped off the bowling of Amir by Azhar Ali in the slips but was caught at backward point by Shadab the very next ball. “
1.00pm While doing his pitch report, Wahab Riaz has suggested that Karachi will be a “batting paradise” today, and he’s advised the fast bowlers to be disciplined while sticking to the back-of-a-length area.
12.50pm Leading up to this tournament-opener, there’s quite a bit of focus on Rachin Ravindra, who hasn’t played a game since suffering that freak head injury during the first match of the recent ODI tri-series. Danyal Rasool watched him bat at the nets yesterday, and he looked in good shape, but New Zealand have been cautious about his return, and haven’t yet confirmed if he’ll start today.
12.30pm When the Champions Trophy was born, under a different name, in 1998, the event was designed to raise funds and expand the game beyond the nine Test nations of the time. The first edition was held in Bangladesh, but Bangladesh – so close to Full Member status, but we didn’t know it then – weren’t participants.
