PCB Clarifies Champions Trophy Tour Schedule Changes
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed that the Champions Trophy tour is rescheduled, not cancelled. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi shared this during a press conference in Lahore. The announcement came following itinerary updates by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
The tour’s revised schedule now includes new stops like Taxila, Khanpur, Abbottabad, Nathia Gali, and Karachi. Previously announced locations such as Muzaffarabad, Hunza, and Skardu have been replaced. The updates follow concerns raised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
PCB Addresses India’s Concerns Over Cross-Border Participation
Chairman Naqvi emphasized that Pakistan is open to addressing India’s concerns. He urged India to communicate any reservations about participating in the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan. Naqvi stated that if India voices specific issues, PCB will actively work to resolve them.
Despite reports of India’s reluctance to cross the border for the tournament, Naqvi remained firm. He reminded everyone that Pakistan had shown courtesy to visiting teams before. He also noted that other nations had played matches in Pakistan without incident.
PCB Consults ICC Amid India’s Reluctance
The PCB is now waiting for the ICC’s official response. Sources indicate that PCB may seek legal and governmental advice. This would guide their next steps if India remains unwilling to travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy.
Naqvi also highlighted the need for clarity from the ICC. He stressed the importance of finalizing the tournament schedule to complete preparations. He reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to successfully hosting the event.
Gaddafi Stadium Upgrades in Full Swing
Naqvi inspected the upgradation work at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium. He assured the media that the renovations would be completed on time. The improvements are crucial for hosting the Champions Trophy in 2025.
Work at the stadium is being closely monitored. Naqvi stated that the board is committed to ensuring everything stays on schedule. The upgrades will enhance the stadium’s readiness for high-profile matches.
PCB Introduces Temporary Coaching Appointments
Discussing coaching arrangements, Naqvi announced that Aqib Javed would serve as a temporary white-ball coach. His appointment lasts for three months while the search for a permanent coach continues. The hiring process for a full-time coach will begin soon.
Naqvi provided reassurance on other staffing matters. He clarified that Wahab Riaz is still actively fulfilling his responsibilities. There have been no dismissals, and all coaches remain committed to their roles.
Unity Among Former Cricket Stars
Naqvi addressed concerns about former cricketers leaving the board. He insisted that Mohammad Yousuf would not be leaving his current responsibilities. The chairman is focused on uniting former players rather than allowing any departures.
He expressed appreciation for Abdul Razzaq, calling him “very important.” Naqvi’s remarks emphasized the importance of collaboration and unity within the cricketing community. He remains dedicated to fostering a strong support team around Pakistan cricket.
