Bangladesh Transitions from BPL to ODI Mindset
Bangladesh is shifting from T20 cricket to ODI format ahead of the Champions Trophy 2025. The team is training rigorously to adapt to the 50-over game after concluding the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). Head coach Phil Simmons is confident that the players will quickly adjust despite not playing ODIs since December.
- Bangladesh is adjusting from T20 to ODI cricket.
- Intensive training sessions are scheduled in Dhaka.
- First match against India is on February 20 in Dubai.
- Phil Simmons emphasizes mental preparation for ODIs.
Intensive Training at Shere Bangla National Stadium
The BPL ended on February 7, and the next day, several players joined the training camp at Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka. These players were from teams eliminated before the BPL final. The team will train until February 12, before heading to Dubai.
Simmons understands the challenge but believes playing white-ball cricket in BPL has kept the players sharp. To bridge the gap, double practice sessions are being held, focusing on batting and bowling under different conditions.
- Morning sessions focus on regular batting and bowling.
- Evening sessions help players adjust to night conditions.
- Mental preparation for longer ODI matches is a key focus.
Mental Readiness for 50-Over Cricket
Simmons insists that players need to build the 50-over mentality. They must be ready to bat for 50 overs and develop patience. With the first game against India, the team must be fully prepared.
“We are getting ready for Dubai,” said Simmons. “Once we adapt to conditions, we can focus on the rest of the competition. Pakistan will offer familiar conditions afterward.”
Najmul Hossain Shanto’s Comeback Challenge
A key concern is Najmul Hossain Shanto, who hasn’t played much in recent months. Shanto missed the West Indies tour due to a hamstring injury. His last international match was in November. After recovery, he played in National Cricket League T20s and participated in five BPL matches for Fortune Barishal.
Simmons believes in Shanto’s strong mentality: “He worked hard while injured. We need a strong mindset from every player, and I believe he has that.”
Nahid Rana’s Pace Concerns
Another focus is Nahid Rana’s bowling speed. His pace dropped in the BPL’s later matches, raising concerns. However, in training, he showed signs of improvement.
“He looked slower in BPL,” Simmons noted. “But after some rest, his pace is returning. He looked sharp in training, and his run-up has improved.”
The Road to Champions Trophy 2025
Bangladesh will face India in their first match on February 20 in Dubai. The team aims to adjust to UAE conditions quickly. Simmons believes in strong preparation, stating, “You play your best game when the day arrives. We have made progress, and if we play at our best, we have a good chance.”
Bangladesh’s Training Highlights:
- Switching from T20 to ODI cricket.
- Training twice daily in Dhaka.
- Mental preparation for longer matches.
- Focusing on Dubai conditions before Pakistan.
- Key players like Shanto and Rana improving their form.
